Current opportunities

Positions in the lab

  • For postdoctoral researchers: I am always interested in hearing from prospective postdoc candidates. If you are interested in working with me, please reach out to me at either jjohnson@carnegiescience.edu or jejohnson@ku.edu with a cover letter and CV. I am particularly interested in understanding the big questions you care about, the kinds of methods you already have expertise in and those you want to develop experience with, and how postdoctoral training in my lab would advance your career goals. In 2024, I have support available for postdocs to work on defined projects, and I would also be happy to help you develop a fellowship application to explore a new direction of your choosing. Some relevant fellowship opportunities are listed below.

  • For graduate students: In 2024, I’ll be recruiting 1-2 PhD students to start at KU in 2025. The KU EEB website has lots of information about the application process, admission requirements, and FAQs. If you are interested in joining my lab, please reach out to me at jejohnson@ku.edu with a cover letter that describes why you are interested in working with me, and a CV that summarizes your education and any previous research experience. If our research interests are a good match, I would be happy to help you develop an application to KU’s PhD program, as well as to external fellowships. You can apply to some external fellowships in parallel with the PhD program, and others after you have been accepted to the program (see below).

  • For undergraduate students: If you are a student at Stanford who is interested in getting research experience in plant ecophysiology in the first half of 2024 while my lab is still at Carnegie, please reach out to me at jjohnson@carnegiescience.edu to discuss opportunities to contribute to ongoing projects. Starting in August 2024, there will be a range of new opportunities for undergraduate students after my lab moves to KU. If you are interested in developing an honors thesis for your BA or BS degree at KU, please reach out to me at jejohnson@ku.edu to discuss opportunities for developing independent projects in my lab.
